Founder of Beyond Borders. My understanding of travel did not begin with passports or frequent flyer miles. It began in South Africa, where hospitality is not something we do. It is part of how we see one another.
A place is understood through its people.
That belief became the foundation of Beyond Borders.
Why Beyond Borders Exists
Travel taught me the same lesson long before I realised I was building a business around it. The places I remember most are rarely the ones with the grandest hotels or the most famous landmarks. They are the places where someone helped me see differently.
A guide who explained why a landscape mattered. A chef who shared family traditions over dinner. A conservationist whose passion transformed the way I looked at wildlife. An owner who told me why they chose to build where they did.
Growing up in South Africa taught me that every destination contains many stories, and that no single itinerary can tell them all. The role of a travel advisor is not simply to recommend where to stay. It is to introduce people to those stories. That is why Beyond Borders exists.
My Philosophy
There is an African proverb I keep returning to.
"Wisdom is like a baobab tree. No one person can embrace it."
I think about travel in much the same way. No advisor, guide or hotel knows a destination completely. Real understanding comes from listening to many voices.
That is why I spend time with lodge owners, guides, chefs, artisans, conservationists and local communities. The Intelligence Library is built from those conversations. Private Journeys are shaped by them.
How I Think
No two travellers deserve the same recommendation. Before I think about destinations, I think about people. How you like to travel. How quickly you move. Whether you find joy in conversation or solitude. Whether you wake before sunrise or linger over breakfast.
Those details matter far more than star ratings. The right journey is rarely the most expensive one. It is the one that feels unmistakably yours.
How I Research & Recommend
Whenever possible, I experience places first-hand. I walk the properties. Meet the owners. Spend time with guides. Share meals with the people who shape the guest experience.
When I haven't visited somewhere personally, I say so. My recommendations are then built on trusted relationships, repeat client feedback and years of destination knowledge.
I believe honesty strengthens trust. Clients deserve to understand not only what I recommend, but why.
What Every Journey Leaves Behind
In many parts of Africa, hospitality is measured not by perfection, but by how someone makes you feel.
Seen.
Welcomed.
Looked after.
I hope every journey designed by Beyond Borders leaves people with that same feeling. Not simply that they travelled well, but that they understood a place more deeply because of the people they encountered there.
If that happens, then the journey has done exactly what it was meant to do.
